Basic Info for Choosing an Acne Treatment

By: Paul E. Web

Acne, the common skin disorder that has left millions of individuals looking for an effective acne treatment. Since this skin condition is not selective and affects a wide range of people, both young and old, acne researchers are constantly working towards a universal acne treatment, yet no one product works on everyone. Selection from the many quality products available today does need some basic knowledge.

Before beginning any acne treatment, it would be helpful to understand what acne is and how it develops, and your particular acne condition. A quick visit to your doctor or a dermatologist can improve your acne treatment success. Many people buy over-the-counter acne medications, without ever knowing what it does or what acne and skin condition it helps.

An important point to consider in seeking your acne treatment, is the different approaches to acne blemish control. Two of the major acne medications are benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid and each combats acne differently. Benzoyl peroxide is an antibacterial agent that kills P. Acnes which is the bacteria that causes acne. Salicylic acid on the other hand is an exfoliant that works inside the follicle, slowing shedding of skin cells which can clog the follicle and cause acne. Both acne products may affect your skin type differently so dermatologist guidance is a plus. Modern acne treatment now consists of an acne kit, consisting of several products, which are used together as a regiment to control acne. Most acne kits include a cleanser or face wash, a topical gel or cream and finally a lotion to rehydrate and lessen irritation to the skin. Usually either benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid is added to one or more of these products with other acne fighting ingredients. Some are designed to remove excess oil, while not drying out your skin. All in all, these acne medications are designed to give you healthier skin.

Once you have selected the form of acne treatment you're going to use, one good rule of thumb is to only wash the affected area twice each day or as recommended by your dermatologist. Aggressive washing to get rid of acne quickly can irritate the skin and make the condition worse. Keeping this basic information in mind and following a prescribed daily acne blemish control should put you on the road to acne free skin.
